Sports betting is a type of gambling that has become increasingly popular and acts as an important service industry in an array of countries.

Millions of Britons in fact take part in such a pastime every week; this comes in the shape of the football pools.

In addition to standard sports betting, there are many side-betting games available. These are often played by casual groups of spectators. Games that are involved include the likes of Fantasy Sports Leagues, Super Bowl Squares, in person spectator games such as Moundball and NCAA Basketball tournaments.

It is probably best to place a sports’ bet on a little something you know about as otherwise you may end up losing a lot of money!

Fantasy sports leagues are often popular amongst works friends and colleagues and come in the shape of monetary entry fees and great winnings!

Sport’s bets can be placed in a bookie’s or alternatively online and generally happen prior to an event, such as a horse race or a football match for example. You can find all the information you could ever need at Coral Sports Online, one of the biggest betting shops currently in the arena. Coral offer bets on all types of sports, including Greyhound racing and American basketball!

Placing a bet online is an easy and hassle-free way to win a little extra cash, however this money can only be won if you bet on the right team.

It is wise to read up on the team in question in order to get an idea of their track record, placing a bet on a random team may result in a loss unless you are extremely lucky. Luck however shouldn’t be fallen for, especially if you intend to place a high cash bet!

Football is one of the most popular sports of all time, whether you enjoy playing it, watching it, or just simply betting on it, everybody has an opinion and prediction. So why not turn that into money by placing a quick and easy bet? Well firstly, with the amount of sites going it might be difficult to choose who you get to wager with. You just have to remember that whichever one you do ultimately choose is all down to personal preference. Each site does offer slightly different odds, and their own incentive for signing up and placing a bet, so looking around the market is a definite must.

A big betting site right now is www.bet365.com. The commercial time it received during the breaks and finish of the Champion’s League football matches probably helped boost that significantly. If bet365 doesn’t take your fancy then try visiting the site of any of the big name bookies you would expect to find in your town, such as Ladbrokes or William hill.

William Hill, Victor Chandler, Ladbrokes, Bwin, Betfair and Bet365 are probably the biggest and most popular betting sites online at the moment. So have a look around each of them, see what odds are going and then make a decision which one you want to place a bet with. You should start with a relatively small bet as there are always plenty of sports games to bet on and perfect your predictions before jumping in with a larger sum of money.

bwin.com has announced a new £5 free bet offer which is exclusive to readers of bwinbetting.com, the new football betting site which arms punters with all the info they need to take advantage of the best odds offered by the world’s largest online gaming company.

bwin.com is offering customers a new £5 free bet offer through its recently-launched football betting site, http://www.bwinbetting.com. The incentive is exclusively available to bwinbetting.com readers and has been launched in time for the new football season, which is now just weeks away.

With no deposit required, the £5 free bet offer couldn’t be easier to claim. All customers need to do is head to the competitions page on bwinbetting.com, enter their mobile phone number in the designated text box and follow the instructions they receive via text message. The free £5 will be automatically added to their bwin.com accounts, allowing them to start betting immediately. For those not yet signed up for a bwin.com account, the £5 free bet offer can be used on top of the existing matched £25 free bet new customers receive for registering.

Once the money is in a customer’s account it can be used to place bets on the 90-plus sports catered for by the world’s largest online gaming company. The free £5 must be bet at least three times before it can be withdrawn and the offer must be claimed before 31st December 2011. The one remaining caveat is that the offer is only available to people with a valid UK phone number.

Known to football fans across the world as the shirt sponsor of Spanish giants Real Madrid, bwin.com launched bwinbetting.com earlier this year with the aim of ensuring punters can make the most informed betting decisions possible. It features previews of all the latest games across a wide variety of leagues and cups, a comprehensive stats section, betting tips and football news.

“We cannot wait for the start of the season at bwinbetting.com and know that UK football fans feel the same way,” said editor Chris Bryant.

“So we decided to offer this £5 free bet promotion to allow our readers to take advantage of the huge range of football odds offered by bwin for what promises to be another great campaign.”

It’s the biggest tennis event of the year and it will be celebrating its 125th birthday and it couldn’t be a more exciting match up. It will be the battle between world number 1 Rafael Nadal and world number 2 Novak Djokovic. Nadal is probably the most aggressive and brutal player in years, but he will be facing the soon to be world number 1 Djokovic. In this season alone he has only lost one match out of 38 after his record breaking 43 winning streak. He is known for diving around the court and retrieving the ball from almost impossible places.

In the women’s it was 5th seed Maria Sharapova who won the prestigious trophy at the young age of 17, but due to injury she has struggled recently. She is looking strong and it will take something special to stop her. In her way was left handed Petra Kvitova who was the massive underdog. Petra Kvitova had a massive advantage due to Sharapova lack of experience with left handers. Sharapova has played over 400 matches against right handers, but only around 40 ‘lefties’. Would this be the deciding factor in the final.

A memorable 125th Championship ended with two new names on the singles honours boards. The men’s title went, for the first time, to a player from Serbia as Novak Djokovic halted Rafael Nadal’s 20-match winning streak at Wimbledon - a run which included the 2008 and 2010 titles - with a merited 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory. It was the Serb’s fifth victory over Nadal in a final this year and took his won-lost record for 2011 to an incredible 48-1. Nadal was playing with a pain-killing injection in a sore foot, suffered in the fourth round and was below his best form. Djokovic on the other hand swept all before him, and was justly congratulated by the loser for playing “very, very high level”.

In the ladies’ singles Petra Kvitova upset the form book by outhitting the 2004 champion and hot favourite Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4. The 21-year-old lefty added further lustre to the tennis reputation of the Czech Republic as two of her compatriots and former Wimbledon champions, Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotna, looked on from the Royal Box, alongside eight other ladies’ champions of yesteryear. Navratilova, now an American citizen and winner of nine Wimbledons, had perceptively predicted that her fellow left-hander’s serve and groundstrokes would prove too much for Sharapova to handle and she was proved correct. The tall blonde kept her nerve and emotions in check until she met Novotna and Navratilova afterwards, when the tears finally flowed.

It has been a memorable Championship and it will never be forgotten.

During here career Venus Williams has won 43 singles titles and 19 doubles titles. Although her current singles ranking is only 33, since she turned professional in 1994 she has accumulated nearly $28 million in prize money. This year will be her 16th Wimbledon appearance. The last time when won the title at Wimbledon was in 2008, which was her fifth Wimbledon singles title. She also has four Wimbledon doubles titles.

Her sister Serena Williams has won 37 career singles titles and 20 doubles. Her current ranking is 26. She turned professional one year after her sister but with life time tournament winnings of nearly $33 million she has done a little better. His will be her twelfth appearance at Wimbledon. She is the current Wimbledon ladies champion, a title that she has earned on a total of four occasions and to which she can add four Wimbledon doubles titles.

So what is it that made these two women from Michigan in the USA such a tennis phenomenon?

Their father Richard Williams had a considerable amount to do with it. He and his partner Oracene Price have between them five daughters. Venus and Serena are full sisters whilst Yetunde, Lyndrea and Isha are half sisters to them.

Serena and Venus started playing tennis when they were five years old and were coached by their father. By the time they were nine they joined a tennis academy and were coached by Rick Macci who noticed their outstanding talent. However it did not all go smoothly and there were some disagreements between Macci and Oracene, who eventually removed his daughters from the academy and took them off the junior tennis circuit and became entirely responsible for their training.

Both of the sisters have similar tennis styles, and are powerful baseline players. They are both extremely agile and very strong, and some of the best servers in women’s tennis. Their dominance of the women’s game for so many years has met with a certain amount of controversy and some resentment. They also suffered a terrible tragedy when their half sister Yetunde Price was shot in the head and killed. Yetunde was personal assistant to both Serena and Venus.

Although the only British hopeful is Andy Murray he attracts less betting that did Tim Henman when it was his era as the main representative of Great British tennis hopes. Despite the fact that Henman never failed to disappoint, he attracted huge sums of Wimbledon betting money much to the delight of the bookmakers. By contrast Andy Murray is not as popular as Henman was; perhaps we have never forgiven him for his comments about the England soccer team (he said that he supported anyone who played against England). However there will still be considerable sums wagered on him achieving Wimbledon glory.

The current king of men’s tennis is Rafael Nadal whose form in the French Open was nothing short of miraculous. The way he disposed of Roger Federer in the final demonstrated some of the best tennis that has ever been played. Not surprisingly he is the favourite for the Wimbledon title and odds on him winning are round about 2 to 1, with odds on Federer being just a little longer. However the performance on clay in the French Open does not translate directly to the Wimbledon grass and the spectator effect can never be discounted; Murray is on a high following his win at Queens and with the crowd behind him who knows, he might just pull it off.

However, if you want a bit of betting fun, then why not take a little risk with an outsider. One outsider you might like to consider is Robin Soderling. When he is on a run, remarkable things can happen to his tennis. He is fundamentally a great player and early betting shows him with odds of 40 to 1, which is definitely worth a punt. If you do so and win, remember that you first heard it here.

Over the years, a huge variety of new additions and then changes have been made to the England football shirt. It has taken years to arrive at the familiar design that we recognise today.

Although we all think of player numbers on their shirts as the norm today, originally football shirts did not display numbers at all. The England football team first wore team numbers on their shirts in 1937, in a match against Scotland in Glasgow. The next major milestone in the uniform’s history didn’t occur until over ten years later in 1948, when the team displayed the crown symbol on their emblem for the last time. A year later the Tudor Roses were introduced to the emblem for the first time. Another thing we take for granted with football shirts today is the short sleeves, at least for the outfield players. However, that was only introduced in 1950, prior to which the entire team wore shirts with long sleeves.

The numbers introduced to the shirts in 1937 were team numbers, but were updated to squad numbers in 1954. The actual design of the shirt underwent another significant change in the same year when England wore shirts with a V-neck for the first time, setting the precedent for the next few decades. The tradition of long white socks on the England team began in 1957. Their old royal blue shirt was worn for the last time in 1959, and the all red shirt donned for the first time a few years later in 1962. The first time a light blue uniform was introduced was in 1970, with a yellow shirt donned in 1973 but quickly gotten rid of later that year.

There have also been several milestones in the development of the goal keeper shirts. In 1958, the England goal keeper of the time was Colin McDonald. He wore a numbered jersey for the very first time. In 1970, the England keeper Gordon Banks wore a red jersey for the first time. He was also the first player to wear the Umbro logo, introduced to his uniform in 1971. Tracksuit bottoms have become a norm for goal keepers as they are permitted to wear them instead of shorts according to the Laws of the Game. England goal keeper Peter Shilton was the first to wear tracksuit bottoms in 1973.
